Safety in Mexico City?

I posted this in the yahoo mexico, but i wondered if I could get a differing response from the American tourists or Mexicans living in the U.S., or Mexicans who speak or answer on yahoo english.

I am a girl from Argentina. I have a good friend from the university that now resides in Mexico City and I want to go visit him. I know he will try to accomodate and guide me as much as possible, but I also know he has a job full time, and I will most likely be on my own for a long time.

What is the safety situation in Mexico City for a single woman who is 25? My friend lives near a metro station and I would like to go to a gym in Polanco that he is a member of, but with all the scary news goin around about Mexico City, I am afraid to patronize such an ostentatious location. Is it safe to ride the metro? He said he would let me drive his car, but I am from a small city in Argentina and I hate the circus of parking and trying to find parking and traffic, I would rather take public transport.
